BASF Shanshan combines one year anniversary celebration with the ignition ceremony for its Changsha Phase II expansion project and the formulation of new strategic partnerships

On September 2, BASF Shanshan Battery Materials Co., Ltd. (BSBM), a BASF majority-owned company in China (BASF 51%; Shanshan 49%), celebrated its one year anniversary with the ignition ceremony for the Phase II expansion at Changsha site, which symbolizes the successful trail of new lines. In addition, BSBM has formed several more new strategic partnerships with suppliers, customers and academia partners to envision a sustainable, innovative and resilient battery value chain.

"BASF is very committed of becoming a world-class supplier to the battery industry and want to become a leading supplier of cathode active materials in all major regions of the world. The strong partnership with Shanshan in China is a significant puzzle piece to execute the strategy. I want to extend my thanks to the entire BSBM team and also to the team that works on the integration of this company to make one-plus-one-more-than-two and in forming a real powerhouse joint venture for the battery materials industry in China."

Dr. Markus Kamieth, Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE

"This first year has been a real testament for success. BSBM has emerged to be an instrumental cornerstone of BASF’s global battery materials and recycling business and we are seeing mutual contributions from both partners. This is exactly what we were aiming for. We are committed to support the growth of battery materials and recycling business in China via BSBM to care for the needs of our important customers of the consumer electronic and electromobility market."

The new production lines are designed with high flexibility to produce an advanced product portfolio and meet customers’ diversified needs. Equipped with innovative energy recovery technologies, including off-gas, waste heat and oxygen recycling, the expansion project will enable BSBM to achieve 100 kt annual capacity for cathode active materials (CAM) with an industry-leading carbon footprint.

Wu Guiying, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC (Communist Party of China) Hunan Provincial Committee and the Secretary of the CPC Changsha Municipal Committee, joined the ceremony and witnessed the ignition. “BSBM, as a leading CAM supplier in the industry, has strongly supported Hunan’ vision to build up an advanced industrial cluster and to write a new chapter towards low-carbon transition.” said Ms. Wu, “We are looking forward to closer interaction with BSBM and hope the company could achieve steady improvements in capacity, accelerate execution of construction projects as well as make greater contributions to high-quality social development.”

Followed the ignition ceremony, a collective signing ceremony of strategic partnership agreements took place. With the common goal of building a sustainable and responsible supply chain, BSBM signed framework agreements with multiple partners including customers, suppliers and academia networks. The close collaboration with value chain partners will enable BSBM further strengthen its competitiveness and explore the boundary of battery technologies.

Greeting Messages from Senior Executives

The start-up of the new facility at BSBM Changsha site demonstrated again BASF’s unwavering commitment to the Chinese market. It is also an important measure for BASF to implement its sustainability strategy in China.
