BASF grants nickel metal-hydride battery materials license to Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.
- Focus on stationary power storage applications
- Opportunity to leverage NiMH technology in storage facilities for railway systems and back-up power applications
ISELIN, N.J., May 4, 2015 – BASF announced that it has granted Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) a license to use BASF’s nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) patents and technology in the manufacture and sale of batteries for stationary power storage applications.
BASF, through the OvonicTM battery materials business it acquired in 2012, is the inventor, developer and worldwide licensor of NiMH battery technology. Ovonic continues to conduct research on advanced NiMH anode and cathode materials to deliver improved performance for consumer, vehicle and stationary battery applications.
“We are very pleased to welcome KHI to our family of NiMH technology licensees. This agreement is just the beginning of a close cooperation between our companies that will expand the use of NiMH batteries into significant new growth markets,” said Ralf Meixner, Senior Vice President, BASF Battery Materials.
“KHI has been developing large format NiMH batteries for railroad systems and storing renewable energy produced by wind power and photovoltaic generation for many years now,” said Katsuya Ishikawa, General Manager of the GIGACELL Battery Division of KHI. “We are delighted to align our efforts with BASF to help address current environmental and energy challenges through the increased adoption of advanced stationary source battery solutions.”
