Catalytic Converter / Autocatalyst Recycling

BASF recycles precious metals contained in scrap automotive catalytic converters. We accept ceramic catalytic converters, both canned and monolith.

Catalytic converters vary widely in quality in terms of precious metals content. Our sampling and analysis techniques have been developed over many years to provide accurate results for platinum, palladium and rhodium.

We can provide a variety of pricing and payment options to suit customer needs. In Cinderford, UK autocatalysts are recycled to recover precious metals. In the US, autocatalysts are first processed in Lincoln Park, Michigan and then recycled in Seneca, South Carolina.

Converter Recycling

With 150 years of service and an established culture of integrity, BASF is poised to provide our customers with superior overall value and the highest yield for their autocatalyst recycling lots. We recycle precious metals from ceramic automotive catalytic converters.

Sampling and Assaying

Because catalytic converters tend to vary widely in terms of their precious metal content, the initial measurements must be precise. To determine accurate quantities of platinum, palladium, and rhodium contained in recycling lots, BASF employs well developed analytical and statistical methods. Every consigned batch is processed separately to generate an accurate return to the customer.

Pricing and Financing

BASF provides a variety of pricing and payment alternatives to suit our customer’s needs. This includes financial settlements for precious metals on spot or forward prices or the refining proceeds can be credited to a customer’s metal account to provide metal for manufacturing of catalysts by BASF.

  • Flexible settlement options
  • Accurate precious metals analysis
  • Fast and efficient service
  • Secure logistics and materials handling

BASF Precious Metals Recycling - Cinderford, UK

Cinderford, UK
The Cinderford UK location is a state-of-the-art recycling facility for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from precious metal bearing waste materials such as spent automotive catalysts. The ability to efficiently recycle and recover PGMs from scrap auto catalysts ensures a secondary source as well as the conservation of natural resources enabling a smaller carbon footprint due to reduced mining. Offering the highest possible return rates, BASF's operation at Cinderford is committed to growing its position in the PGM recycling market and providing customers with a high-quality source of these metals for the long-term.

BASF Precious Metals Recycling - Seneca, SC, USA

Seneca, USA
The Seneca plant has expertise in the manufacturing of precious metal catalysts and the recovery of these metals from spent catalysts.

BASF Precious Metals - Shanghai, China

Shanghai, China
BASF's manufacturing plant in Shanghai houses a state-of-the-art facility for producing precious metals-based salts and solutions used in industrial applications. The salts and solutions produced at the 2,200-square meter plant are primarily used to support BASF's mobile emissions catalysts manufacturing operation in Shanghai. This operation uses the products in its formulations for automotive catalytic converters, which are the single most important solution for reducing emissions from the exhaust of cars, trucks and buses.
