In addition to optimizing existing cathode active materials for lithium-ion batteries, BASF is also researching next generation battery concepts and augments in in-house research efforts by collaborating with leading scientists, start-ups and universities around the globe.

High energy lithium metal anodes

In 2012, BASF invested $50 million to acquire an equity ownership position in Sion Power, a Tucson, Arizona-based battery technology and engineering company. Through such collaborations, BASF is positioned to take a leadership role in developing next-generation battery material solutions, such as high-energy lithium-metal anodes, like Licerion®.

Benefit from abroad academic network

As part of BASF's scientific network on electrochemistry and batteries, BASF is also involved in the development of novel and improved materials through its collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and their jointly funded Battery and Electrochemistry Laboratory (BELLA). BELLA combines fundamental work with application-driven projects on materials and cell components for next-generation batteries. Click here to learn more.

Together with academic institutions and other private partners, BASF is also engaged in numerous research projects that are partly publicly funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research as well as the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and implements these jointly.
