BASF TODA Battery Materials LLC (BTBM)

BASF TODA Battery Materials LLC (BTBM) has been formed by BASF Japan (66% equity) and Toda Kogyo (34% equity) in Japan in 2015. It specializes in cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries, including Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide (NCA) and Nickel Cobalt Manganese Oxide (NCM).

The company is further expanding the production capacity to increase the supply of high nickel CAM for up to 45 GWh cell capacity per year .

Expansion to Meet Growing Market Demand and Strengthen the Local Supply Chain

In July 2022, BASF and TODA announced a further expansion of the production capacity for high-nickel CAM at the Onoda site. By 2025, BTBM’s annual capacity for high nickel cathode active materials will reach up to 60,000 tons.

The project has been selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a "Program for Promoting Investment in Japan to Strengthen Supply Chains".

Headquartered in Sanyo-Onoda city, Yamaguchi Prefecture, BASF TODA Battery Materials employs approximately 150 people and has offices and production facilities in Tokyo, Onoda and Kita-Kyushu. Onoda Site

Located in Sanyo-Onoda city, Yamaguchi prefecture, the Onoda site was built for cathode material production in 2003. The production facilities were expanded in 2011, 2012 and 2017. The R&D center is also located here, where it develops cathode materials such as High-energy (HE) NCM.
