As the demand for electric vehicles accelerates, so do the calls for forward-thinking battery recycling solutions. With tightening government regulations alongside sufficient metal supply and price volatility challenges—the need for a comprehensive and cost-effective battery recycling approach has never been greater.
At BASF, our vision of the EV battery value chain is a closed loop, with the goal of powering a net-zero future for e-mobility. This involves a multi-step and multi-site process to feed end-of-life batteries and production scrap from cell producers into the loop, transforming them into reusable or recyclable materials.
We’ve recently announced several expansions to our EV battery recycling capacity. Read more about our plan for advancing our battery recycling capacity to power a net-zero future for e-mobility, starting with a new, prototype battery recycling plant in Schwarzheide, Germany. The plant is the next step in further growing our recycling footprint and will be followed by a commercial-scale battery recycling black mass plant. With the prototype plant, Schwarzheide becomes an important research center for hydrometallurgy at BASF which enables the fast and effective scale-up of the battery recycling technology for a closed-loop battery value chain.
