BASF launches adsorbent Sorbead® Air to meet needs of compressed air market

  • New adsorbent offers customers significant cost and energy savings
  • Seven- to ten-year lifespan leads to refill cost savings of up to 40 percent

ISELIN, NJ, September 5, 2018 – BASF launched Sorbead® Air, its most economical and efficient adsorbent for air drying, specifically tailored for the compressed air market. The product offers customers an opportunity for significant cost and energy savings over a dryer’s lifetime thanks to its higher capacity and lower desorption temperatures.

“Compressed air is a critical utility in countless production plants worldwide,” said Adrian Steinmetz, Vice President, Global Chemical Catalysts and Adsorbents, BASF. “Sorbead Air has a seven- to ten-year lifespan that can result in decreased dryer downtime and refill cost savings of up to 40 percent.”

Sorbead Air adsorbents are hard, spherical beads of alumino-silicate gel that resist abrasion. Due to the beads’ large surface area and pore volume, which increases adsorption capacity, Sorbead Air offers higher water uptake at varying levels of humidity than other products in the market. As an additional benefit it also requires lower temperatures during regeneration.

“Choosing Sorbead Air over other adsorbents can save customers up to 8.5 kWh per hour and more than 20 percent of the total cost to run the compressed air systems necessary for their operations,” said Brian Houston, Global Business Director, BASF Adsorbent Solutions. “Sorbead Air is another great example of how BASF strives to develop tailored, sustainable solutions that deliver additional value to our customers.”
